In the witchcraft community, we love our smoke cleansing practices. There’s nothing quite like throwing open the windows, calling on your favorite sacred plant, lighting up and watching smoke hazy in the air. The feeling afterward is one of spiritual lightness. But what if you’re in a situation where smoke is not an option? Whether it be a loved one with a health condition or a strict landlord, there are many reasons why smoke may not be the best cleansing option for you. If this is the case, you have another option that works just as well.

An energy cleansing spray is made from the same sacred herbs you would have activated with fire, but in this way, you will use them in the form of essential oils, where their beneficial properties have already been extracted for you. We will also be adding some additional ingredients to up the potency of this powerful room cleansing spray. You can spritz it in your sacred space before a ritual or open the windows and use it in the same way as smoke cleansing if the energy in your home feels “off” to remove any stagnant energy.

As the base of our room spray we will use water, so let’s go over the basics of using water in magick and witchcraft! Choose one from the options below that matches the intention you want to create with your energy cleansing spray.

Moon and Sun Water

Your first option is taking any water and charging it under the moon. The most popular method is gathering the energy of the full moon, which is a great option for this spray, since the energy is purifying and cleansing.

If you wish to banish negativity with your spray, try charging it under the waning moon.

A new moon is good for charging your water with the intention of new beginnings and transformation.

To encourage personal and spiritual growth, charge your water under a waxing moon.

If you want to take this a step further, check what sign the moon is in. This can lend to the energy by influencing it with the energy of the associated astrological sign.

Instead of the moon, another option is to charge your water under the sun. This water is energizing and encourages positivity and productivity.

Different Types of Water

Rainwater: You can collect this easily by setting a large bowl outside in a rain shower! This is kind of your all-purpose magickal water, great for cleansing, protecting, and growth, especially when used in spells you want to grow stronger over time.

Stormwater: Water from a violent thunderstorm carries a lot stronger power than water collected from a light downpour, and the potency varies depending on the strength of the storm, so use your intuition with this one. It can be used to boost any spell working.

Seawater: Collect seawater to use in healing work and blessing rituals. The natural sea salt in the water adds properties of cleansing and protection.

River water: If you are doing a spell to help you release something or make a positive change in your life, river water is a great choice. Notice the way it moves rapidly, never stagnant.

Lake water: Do you feel peaceful when looking out over a lake? Lake water is great for spells and rituals to promote peace and contentment.

Swamp water: This muddy, murky water is generally used for cursing, crossing, and revenge work. It can also be used for more aggressive banishing and binding spells.

Dew water: Collecting dew is often a practice in faery magick and glamour magick. Though you won’t get the entire amount of water you need by collecting a few drops, you can add it to moon or sun water for use in love spells or fertility spells.

Snow water: Because autumn is the death phase of the sun cycle, the season that comes next represents rebirth. Melted winter snow can be used in spells and rituals for new beginnings and transformation.

Ice water: If you have icicles hanging from your roof after the last snowstorm, you can collect the water that drips from them to use in your spells. Like snow, this water can be used for transformation, and also things related to creativity and purification.

Harbor Water: If you live near a port or harbor, collecting this water can be used in abundance and prosperity spells. Historically, this is the way goods were transported making this water essential to making money and well-being.

Making Your Energy Cleansing Room Spray

You’ll need:

  • 2-4 oz spray bottle
  • Funnel
  • Water of your choice
  • Witch hazel
  • Essential oils that match your intention
  • Salt
  • Optional: crystal chips that match your intention

First add your salt and crystals if you are using them into the bottle. The salt not only adds a protective element but it acts as an emulsifier so your oils don’t float to the top of the water.

Essential oils ideal for energetic cleansing include:

  • Sage
  • Palo Santo
  • Frankincense
  • Rosemary
  • Cedarwood
  • Juniper
  • Black Pepper
  • Fennel
  • Thyme
  • Pine

If you’re using this spray for a more specific intention, you can add a different essential oil of a plant that matches your intention, or even mix it with one of the energy cleansing essential oils. Hold your chosen oil bottle between your hands, getting clear on your intention and calling on the spirit of the plant or your deity if you work with one.

Next, add a few drops of oil into the salt at the bottom of your spray bottle, allowing it to absorb. Then add a splash of witch hazel. You don’t need a lot of this, but it also acts as an emulsifier to help the oil and water mix.

With your funnel, fill the rest of the bottle with your water of choice. Shake the bottle before each use. Now you can cleanse the energy of your space smoke-free!
