Divination Methods for Beginners

Divination Methods for Beginners | Green Witch Living

If you grew up similar to me, at some point in your life you were given the message in one way or another that your intuition couldn’t be trusted. Maybe it was at school, at church, at home, directly or indirectly. When you are told something again and again, your body begins to believe it and we stop listening to the wisdom of our own bodies and our inner guiding voice grows quieter and quieter.

Divination can be a helpful way to tune into the wisdom of your body and your subconscious mind. Many divination tools react to your body’s chemistry when your intuition causes bodily responses we may not feel unless we are tuned in. Ever have a “gut feeling?” That’s what makes these divination tools work for you!  As you practice and pay attention, noticing the times your intuition was right, it will help you gain confidence.

What is Divination?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines divination as “the art or practice that seeks to foresee or foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge usually by the interpretation of omens or by the aid of supernatural powers.” But you can use divination for more than fortune-telling and speaking with spirits. I was taught that divination tools are helpful for connecting us to our intuition and our higher selves. It is a tool to help us go within and dig up what we already know inside us.

Methods of Divination

The best part is that there are so many ways to practice divination and an option for everyone. Not all divination methods require tools either. I’ll start with two no-equipment methods that I have learned from different teachers that I find helpful. Then we will move onto the methods that require tools. So let’s go over just a few you can use for this purpose.

Embodiment

The first is much like meditation. All you need is your body, no need for fancy tools to help you tap into your internal wisdom. Just you sitting quietly with yourself. In a comfortable seated position, place one hand on your belly and the other on your heart. Ask your body to show you what yes feels like. Then ask your body to show you what no feels like. Note the difference.

Applied Kinesiology

Another type of body divination. Press your forefinger and thumb together as you ask yourself a yes or no question. Now take the forefinger of your other hand and try to break the closed finger and thumb apart. If you cannot, the answer is yes. If they break apart easily, the answer is no.

Tarot

This popular method of divination uses cards that tell a story, pulling up in the subconscious what we know about ourselves and things to be aware of for our futures. Visit the tarot section of our blog for more in-depth articles!

Pendulum

If you want to really get in touch with how your body reacts to yes or no questions, pendulums are the way to go. Ask it to show you yes, no, maybe, and I don’t know. Then, with your elbow securely supported, ask your question!

Runes

This method of divination has been used for thousands of years and is a tried and true way of making decisions. The symbols are Elder Futhark, the Norse alphabet, each letter carrying a specific meaning.

Tasseography

This is the art of reading tea leaves. I’m a huge fan of this one because I’m a huge fan of tea! When you finish your tea, let the leaves fall to the bottom and see what shapes they make. Whatever comes to mind when you see a shape is what your subconscious wants you to know.

Scrying

Tasseography is just one form of scrying. You can go the traditional route and look into a crystal ball, or my favorite, use nature and what is around you. What do you see in the clouds? In the flames of a fire? In the leaves of a tree? What comes to mind when you see a certain bird, insect, or wild animal. These are called omens and may help you in figuring out your difficult decision.

Whatever you decide, don’t forget to trust your intuition! Don’t overthink it, you know the answer.
